Mortgage Underwriter

Reports to: Underwriting Manager

Supervisors Direct: None

Classification: Exempt

Role: Evaluate mortgage loan applications and approve or deny loans in accordance with regulatory guidelines, investor requirements, and company policies. Support the quality of the mortgage loan portfolio by assisting with quality control findings and clearing deficiencies.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Authorize and underwrite mortgage loans.
  • Review and verify loan applications and supporting documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Analyze loan risk and request additional information as needed.
  • Make loan eligibility decisions and approve or reject applications.
  • Specify and document underwriting conditions as required.
  • Return applications to the loan officer for additional documentation when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory standards, investor guidelines, and company policies.
  • Prepare reports on underwriting findings and decisions.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of federal, state, and investor regulations, as well as company products, systems, operational procedures, and policies.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of new products and programs.
  • Serve as a direct escalation point for Sales and Underwriting, in coordination with the Underwriting Manager.
  • Ensure all loans are of marketable or portfolio quality.
  • Maintain underwriting purchase deficiencies within company standards and notify the Underwriting Manager of deficiencies or unsalable loans.
  • Respond to post-closing purchase deficiencies within company standards.
  • Assist in resolving quality control (QC) findings by reviewing underwriting decisions, clearing deficiencies, and ensuring compliance with internal and investor requirements.
  • Perform department underwriting and conditions as needed to maintain company turnaround times.
  • Support new and ongoing training for department underwriters; participate in team meetings to communicate industry and company changes.
  • Adhere to all applicable compliance regulations.
  • Work in conjunction with the Underwriting Manager to monitor compliance activities and report issues.
  • Follow direction from the Underwriting Manager for resolution of identified issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

Experience: Minimum of 3 years mortgage underwriting experience with DE (Direct Endorsement) designation required.

Certifications: SAR (Staff Appraisal Reviewer) VA designation required or ability to obtain.

Additional experience: USDA mortgage underwriting experience is a plus.

Interpersonal Skills: High level of trust, diplomacy, and tact required. Must be able to influence and collaborate effectively with colleagues and business partners.
