OVERVIEW
Westminster Presbyterian Church is a vibrant, open-minded congregation worshiping in the heart of Minneapolis on Nicollet Mall. As an engaged, urban partner, Westminster has been sharing the good news of God’s peace, love, and justice as a telling presence in the city for more than 160 years.
PURPOSE
The Director of Communications will provide strategic leadership and daily direction for the church’s communications ministry. They will work in partnership with the ministers and other staff members to ensure effective, consistent communications with church members, the wider community, and the staff team.
ACCOUNTABILITY
The Director of Communications is accountable to and supervised by the Senior Pastor and supervises the Communications Coordinator (1.0 FTE).
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Strategic leadership
a. Develop and lead a comprehensive and effective communications ministry for the church that is tailored to Westminster’s multi-generational and varied audiences
b. Lead implementation and continual refinement of strategic communications plan
c. Provide oversight of all church communications – purpose, design, content, and distribution
d. Advise ministers, other staff members, and lay leaders on internal and external communications strategies for their ministry areas
e. Attend monthly board meetings and the occasional Sunday morning
2. Communications content
a. Oversee and supervise all communications platforms (website, print materials, emails, social media, electronic signage, podcasts, etc.)
b. Write and edit content for print and online communications
c. Manage branding and image standards
d. Serve as project manager for work requiring graphic design for digital and print materials (Annual Report, brochures, advertising, newsletter, etc.)
e. Coordinate photography and videography, collaborating with the AV Coordinator and volunteers, or, when needed, contractors
f. Maintain and update Westminster’s iTunes podcast content
3. Staff collaboration
a. Lead staff communications team
b. Supervise Communications Coordinator, and manage this area in their absence
c. Oversee any part-time or contract communications workers
d. Assist occasionally with livestreaming needs for worship and education through website and Facebook live
e. Participate in weekly staff meetings
4. External relations
a. Establish and maintain relationships with key members of the media and communications vendors
b. Manage public communications
c. Coordinate advertising for the church
d. Oversee external event sponsorships, collaborating with other ministry areas for volunteers and programming
DEMONSTRATED QUALIFICATIONS
- Commitment to furthering the ministries of Westminster
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or commensurate combination of education and experience
- Minimum experience of five years leading and managing communications in public, nonprofit and/or for-profit organization
- Experience in creating, implementing, and managing strategic communications
- Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
- Analytical, problem solving, and creative thinking skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines and work collaboratively within a team
- Strong relationship skills
- Strict respect for confidentiality
- Ability to engage varied people and groups and deal diplomatically with challenging situations
- Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat Pro), WordPress, Constant Contact, Microsoft Office Suite.
START DATE: July 15, 2025
SALARY: Starting at $75,000. Commensurate with skills, experiences, and comparable positions.
BENEFITS: two weeks’ vacation + 12 paid holidays annually; 12 days sick leave annually with rollover; employee fully paid medical, dental, vision, life & LTD health benefits; employer contribution of 6% to 403(b) retirement plan, plus up to an additional 3% matching.
SCHEDULE: General business hours and the occasional evening or weekend, including board meetings eight evenings annually. Westminster staff are on site at least two days each week, with Tuesdays required, and are encouraged to connect in-person when possible. Westminster recognizes the fluidity of life’s demands and thus supports a flexible work schedule when possible, within each position.
